Topological collapse of a Möbius soap film

Topological transition of a Möbius soap film developing a twist fold singularity

A Möbius soap film evolution is captured by a high-speed movie (5600 frames/sec), that detects the film collapse and the production of a twist fold singularity (cusp catastrophe). As the soap film frame is gradually distorted, a critical point is reached at which the one-sided film transforms rapidly to a two-sided film. The twisted Plateau border (and induced caustic) is highlighted by a cyan led illumination with fluorescein added to the film.

Experimental set up and results provided by the Goldstein Lab (Cambridge U.).
